Considered as one of the most powerful figures in Philippine Entertainment, Boy Abunda, a famous TV host, publicist and talent manager has come a long way. From his humble beginning, growing up in Eastern Samar with nothing but a dream and a desire to succeed –Boy Abunda worked his way up the ladder of success and has accomplished so much in the field he has chosen because of his dedication and perseverance.

He started as an Assistant Stage Manager in the Metropolitan Theatre, established his own PR firm (Backroom, Inc.), worked as a public relations consultant, became a TV Host and is now the most sought after manager of famous celebrities.

Now at the peak of his career, Boy is still aiming for more. His goal is to attain a much higher education and despite his busy schedule, managed to take up masteral course in Communication Arts at the Philippine Women’s University.

In an interview with PEP, Boy gladly announced “Hopefully, after the elections, tapos ko na ang masteral ko. Thesis na lang. Tapos I will proceed into doctoral degree. Pag-aaralan ko talaga. I’ve always been hungry for knowledge. Naghahanap ako ng panibagong bagay na gagawin, pampalawak ng perspektiba. I’m an interviewer, so you don’t stop learning. And I wanna teach eventually.”

Boy was an undergraduate of Lyceum and Ateneo. “Sa Lyceum ang nangyari, hindi ako naka-graduate. When I was still working at the Metropolitan Theatre, gusto ko sanang tapusin noon habang ako’y nagta-trabaho. I had about six units na lang sa Lyceum. Hindi naman ako masyadong nag-aaral doon. Hindi ko rin nagamit sa masteral ko yung sa Lyceum. Hindi naman nila ibinigay sa akin e. Meron silang requirements na I have to fill-out some papers for me to be able to clear my six units. So when I did my masteral, hindi ko nagamit yung 6 units na nakuha ko. The bulk of my academic units came from Ateneo. Undergrad lang naman ako doon e so pinunuan ko na lang. I can’t imagine, bago ako nag-master’s, tinapos ko muna lahat ng requirements ng undergrad. Nagma-masters ako, wala naman akong diploma! Totoo yan, hindi ko namalayan. Lahat ginawa ko. Nag-exams ako. I did write a piece. Tapos sabay pa nun nag-course set ako ng International Relations and Public Diplomacy. Tuwing Sabado, nandoon ako sa school. Ang daming requirements. Walang shortcut. Pinasukan ko lahat yun. Pero natapos lahat yun kaya one more paper, I’m about to finish, then simultaneous with my thesis, I have my Master’s!” Boy gladly narrated.

Finishing school did not come easy for Boy, he went though a lot of challenge. He needed to persevere and work hard to achieve it. He said “Kasi nung estudyante ako, di ba, habol ng habol ng pambayad, Walang pambayad ang nanay ng tuition fee. Ngayon it’s good kasi iba na yung perspektibo ko. Parang I wanna go to school. At hindi ako nag-o-online ha. I have an option to go online pero ayoko. Gusto ko talagang harapan, may kadiskusyon ka, may kausap ka. My teachers also admit the fact na meron din akong baon-baon bilang practitioner. Yung binabasa namin halimbawa na principles in communication, tsina-challenge ko sila, kasi ito ang kalakaran ngayon.”

Boy Abunda’s desire to achieve higher learning, despite his accomplishment in the industry is something to be admired. Not all are blessed with an easy life. Like Boy, we need to aspire for more to accomplish things. It will not always be an easy road, but with hard work and dedication—nothing is impossible.

  1. I salute Mr. Boy Abunda. He is a true picture of a successful Filipino and a good son . I always hear him expressing his love to his mother. I could feel his sincerity , dedication, committment and honesty to anything that he does.
I am inspired of his achieving higher education despite of his busy schedule. He is a very intelligent person.

I would like to be like him. I always dream that I could still finish my masters degree and Ph.D. But because I am the only parent to four girls for 15 years since my kids lost their father. The dream has remained a dream.
Kudos to Mr. Boy Abuda! May the good Lord bless him with good health and the wisdom to continue his career and his good deeds.
