The Ballad of Boy and Bong

THEY arrive from an afternoon excursion, shopping for orchids for their Quezon City home. They call each other “Baby,” and instinctively change into clothes in the same shade for the photo shoot. One is a celebrity a few years older; the other works behind the scenes, but it’s definitely a relationship of equals. They first met on November 3, 1983 — both remember the date in a heartbeat — and will mark their 24th year as a couple this year.

Vicki Belo can’t understand what the fuss is about.

Asked about her professional rivalry with cosmetic surgeon Manny Calayan on “Showbiz Central” last Sunday, Belo quipped: “If you want to look like Piolo Pascual and Dingdong Dantes, you go to Belo. If you want to look like Boy Abunda, you go to Calayan.”

Belo told Inquirer that she wasn’t being mean, that it was said in jest: “Boy is Calayan’s main male endorser, in the same way that Piolo and Dingdong are my main male endorsers. Why are [people] making a big deal out of that? Calayan put Boy on his billboard because he is proud of him, right?”

Boy ‘hurt’

Abunda said he was “shocked” and “hurt.” He also told Inquirer: “I never had illusions that I’m Miss Universe material. Perhaps Calayan saw a different kind of beauty in me, the same one that Vicki saw before, because she also once asked me to endorse her.”

The TV host, who used to help in Belo’s media relations, added, “I am … blessed [but] I’m not immune to pain, especially since Vicki is a friend. We had more good times than bad. This is not the Vicki I know.” Inquirer.net

Popular cosmetic surgeon Dr. Vicki Belo has apologized to Boy Abunda for reportedly insulting the television host when she appeared on an entertainment talk show in another network.

Belo sent a text message to Abunda saying she was sorry for offending him.

“I'd just like to apologize for the statement I made in Showbiz Central. I'm really sorry that I offended you. Hope you can accept my apology," Belo said in the text message.

During the controversial TV guesting on Sunday, Belo said: “All I’d like to say is, if you want to look like Boy Abunda , go to Calayan, But if you want to look like Dingdong Dantes and Piolo Pascual, come to Belo."

Abunda is one of the endorsers of Calayan Surgicenter, a competitor of Belo Medical Group.

Abunda, who claimed that he and Belo were good friends, reacted to the cosmetic surgeon’s remarks. On Monday the TV host was emotional as he shared that his mother even called him to ask if he did something bad to Belo.

“Vicki, if you are watching, alam mo kahit kailan, hindi ako namuhunan sa gandang panlabas dahil wala ako noon," Abunda said on “SNN: Showbiz News Ngayon.”

"Alam mo, namuhanan ako ng sipag, tiyaga, dasal. At Vicki, wala akong ilusyong maganda, wala akong ilusyon. Pero wala din sinuman ang may karapatang manlait sa aking pagkatao," he said.

The host also defended himself by saying that one doesn’t need good looks like Dantes in order to be happy.

“At mga kaibigan, hindi po tayo kasi kailangang maging kasing [gwapo] ni Dingdong para maging masaya at para maging mabuting tao,” Abunda added.

The country's King and Queen of Talk, Boy Abunda and Kris Aquino, belied reports that their morning show "Boy & Kris" will end because of poor ratings.

"Hindi po ito totoo. Sa aming timeslot sa umaga, we're a leader in that particular timeslot , nationwide ratings. At maraming salamt po at sinusuportahan tayo ng buong-buo ng sambayanang Filipino," Abunda said over ABS-CBN's weekly entertainment show "The Buzz" Sunday afternoon.

Abunda's statement stemmed from reports saying that his show with Aquino will be replaced by another talk show which will be hosted by three women.

The report also claimed that actress Lorna Tolentino is being eyed as one of the hosts of the alleged new show.

Aquino explained that the nationwide ratings of their morning show are even improving.

The actress-host added that their show has the support advertisers, aided by its popularity in the Visayas and Mindanao.

Aside from high rating of "Boy & Kris," the two said they are proud that the show has been recognized by different award-giving bodies.

Among the awards the show and the hosts have won are: Best Celebrity Talk Show Hosts and Best Celebrity Talk Show from the PMPC Star Awards; Best Celebrity Talk Show host for Boy Abunda from the UP Los Baños Gandingan Award; and, the Silver World Medal for Talk and Interview from the 2009 New York Festival. Ai-Ai delas Alas and her talent manager, “The Buzz” host Boy Abunda, on Sunday refuted accusations that she was being ungrateful after she left Belo Medical Group to endorse its strong competitor, the Calayan Surgicenter.

Delas Alas said she left Belo Medical Group after her contract with the dermatology and cosmetic surgery clinic expired.

She also maintained that she and owner Dr. Vicki Belo remain good friends.

Abunda, for his part, explained that delas Alas’s one-year contract ended in May 2008 and Belo did not show any interest to renew the agreement.

“Hindi totoo ang napapabalitang ang renewal [ng contract] ay automatic. The renewal of the contract is subject to mutual agreement… hindi naman interesado ang Belo Medical Group na i-renew ang iyong (delas Alas) kontrata,” he said.

The Calayan Surgicenter, on the other hand, has shown interest and offered the endorsement to his talent, Abunda added.

Meanwhile, Abunda, who is also an endorser of Calayan Surgicenter, denied that he was handling the clinic’s promotional activities.

"First time ito sa buhay namin.

Aminado si Boy na for quite some time ay hindi sila in good terms.

"Nag-sorry ako. Sinabi ko ang lahat ng sama ng loob ko. Sinabi nila ang sama ng loob nila sa akin. Alam mo, it humbles me. It took me a lot of time to realize na hindi siya ako, at hindi ako siya. Hindi ba, kadalasan sinasabi natin na, 'Bakit hindi mo ako magaya? Bakit hindi ka ganito? Bakit hindi ka ganyan?' Mali pala 'yon. And it took me a long time. Sabi ko, salamat sa Diyos na in Nanay's lifetime, hindi man kami perpekto, sinubukan naming mabuo," saad ni Boy.

Mahirap daw talaga na mangyari noon na magkaroon ng ganitong pag-uusap ang pamilya. Pero kailangan na raw talaga, ani Boy, kaya siya na ang nag-initiate.

Outrageously lavish at $2-M

The world’s best-loved fairy tale finally comes to Manila. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella opens its magical doors in the Philippines with Tony Award winner Lea Salonga in the title role of the mistreated and enslaved chimney sweeper-turned-princess.

Fresh from her critically-acclaimed performance as Fantine in Broadway’s current revival of the musical Les Miserables, Lea is back in her hometown to regale her countrymen with her beguiling stage presence and her enchanting voice.

“Lea will give an Asian face to Cinderella,” award-winning Cinderella director Bobby Garcia shared.

Incidentally, Lea is also celebrating her 30th year in show business this 2008. She will celebrate her much-celebrated 30 years with an anniversary concert titled My Life... On Stage at the PICC this May.

During the press conference of the much-awaited musical production, Lea sang There Is Music in You, one of the songs from the musical, to give the press a glimpse of the magical doors that Broadway Asia Entertainment (BAE), the largest producer of Broadway musicals in Asia, will open for the discriminating Asian audience.

The performance is enough to convince everyone that Lea perfectly fits the glass slippers worn by the likes of brilliant English actress and singer Dame Julie Andrews and international pop singer Brandy.

Cinderella will have its world premiere on July 29 and will run until August 24 at the Main Theater of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).
