Cesar Montano is a good sport. Yes, he lost in his gubernatorial bid in his beloved Bohol. He is grateful for more than 100,000 people who voted for him. He ran an honest campaign. He believes in the goodness of the Boholanos. He is willing to wait. He refused to buy votes. He’s okay and he’s moving on. His devotion for Bohol is passionate and admirable. He wants to do films in Bohol tackling the province’s rich culture. This is his vision as a Filipino actor/director reminding people not forget their roots.

I love the two houses of Buboy (Cesar’s nickname) that I visited. The house he built in their ancestral land in Bohol is lovely. Built in wood and stone, it’s sturdy, proud and welcoming. I love the dining area where the dining tables and chairs were designed by Buboy himself.

During the visit, Shine (Sunshine Cruz) was very attentive. And despite the rigid campaigning, she was glowing in her flawless skin, unblemished by the scorching sun.

And Shine is always armed with that big smile that puts you at ease. Their lovely children were also present.

In Quezon City, their house is serene and classy. The Cobonpue pieces make a very strong statement in the living room. In both visits, we talked about Angelo, the elections, coping with loss, and moving on. Buboy talked about the realization of how important it is to hold on to your pagkatao and to your family. Once in a while he would quote verses from the Bible, humbly recognizing the omnipotent power of the Great Director up there.

Buboy is open to the gifts that come his way. He said, he will not wait for them to fall from heaven. He will do his share to look for them. Cesar is used to hard work. The best thing about him aside from his deadly pair of smiling eyes is the fact that he continues to nurture his gifts that make him a brilliant actor and a wonderful human being.

Cesar Montano is eternal!

The Tapusan fiesta

Barangay Baao in Mauban, recently celebrated its town fiesta called Tapusan. Aside from the kalabaw helping in the farm, the people of Baao also ask intercession from their three patron saints — San Isidro Labrador, San Buenaventura and San Roque — for rain to water the plants, for protection against pestilence and of course, for abundant harvest of their crops. The peasant farmers and laborers’ patron saint is San Isidro Labrador.

Tapusan, which means “ending” is the time when farming had already ended, the farmers have made a good harvest after the season and now it is time for everyone to partake in a thanksgiving celebration.

At the recent Tapusan in Baao, the Abulencia family, headed by eldest son Winifredo and his wife Sylvia, was designated hermano mayor.

As hermano mayor of this year’s Tapusan, Winnie invited his nephew General Rolando Bandilla Jr., chief of the country’s Bureau of Fire Protection, to be his co-hermano mayor. Together with Winnie’s siblings Minerva, Elias Antonio, Carlito and Maria Lourdes, and their families, Gen. Bandilla also re-connected with his family’s roots.

Winnie thought of having the theme Pagpapatuloy ng Isang Panata ng Lahi. It is his dream for the Tapusan to be a venue for families to get together, be rooted in the family’s and the nayon’s tradition of giving thanks to God Almighty and the patron saints San Isidro, San Buenaventura and San Roque for a catastrophe-free year and abundant harvest.

As early as June 2009, Winnie started planning for the Tapusan 2010 celebration by calling for several meetings right after his installation as a hermano mayor. Because he is now a resident of Iloilo City, with his successful Absolute Feeds business there, Winnie collaborated with Baao’s community leaders Erlyn Caliwanagan Schinneyer, barangay chairman, and Jerlyn Monteverde, Sangguniang Kabataan chairman. He made sure there was also involvement from the local government which is why he made them co-hermanos. Other co-hermanos who could not be present during meetings and activities, like Singapore-based Gabriel Abulencia dela Torre and wife Minette de Leon, sent their financial contribution.

The year-long preparation resulted in a variety of activities all people of Baao, from the children to the youth to the adults, enjoyed and benefited from. All programs revolved around the theme Pasasalamat at Makabuluhang Kasayahan: Tapusan 2010 Alay Kay San Buenaventura.
