We fell in love with Ysabella, the top-rating soap opera aired on ABS-CBN’s Primetime Bida, not just because of the brilliant performances of its lead actors, especially that of award-winning actress Judy Ann Santos whose striking similarity to the lead character Ysabella is unmistakable, but also because of the chicken recipe that got us all craving for it the moment it had its primetime debut.

Real-life kitchen queen Juday played the title role so convincingly that it has become hard to separate the actor from the character. No other actress can give justice to the role of a young woman destined for culinary greatness other than Juday, whose first-rate acting chops can only be upstaged by her culinary expertise.

Similarly, no other chicken dish can rival Bacolod Chicken Inasal’s grilled wonder called Chicken Inasal, a delicious chicken recipe marinated in local herbs and spices, skewered on bamboo sticks then grilled to juicy perfection, other than the Ysabella Chicken, which became an instant hit in all the branches of the fast-growing restaurant chain.

Chicken Inasal, a native Filipino barbecue that originated from Bacolod City, is so popular there that there are street stands selling the chicken barbecue in almost every corner. It invaded Metro Manila in 1993 when the sisters and brother team of Rose, Bing and JM Tanalgo opened Bacolod Chicken Inasal’s first take-out and delivery counter in EDSA Central. It is now a favorite among the metro’s mall-crazy crowd.

Ysabella Chicken, on the other hand, is a very Pinoy take on the grilled chicken that also transcends regional borders. The secret recipe, which a culinary whiz from ABS-CBN developed, is very interesting because the carefully selected ingredients come from everywhere in the Philippines.

To give you an idea just how Ysabella Chicken tastes, just imagine the burst of flavors when you mix the finest garlic from Ilocos and the most mouth-watering Bagoong Balayan (shrimp paste) from Batangas (the other ingredients won’t be revealed since they are well-guarded secret) in one chicken dish. The result is a gastronomic delight.

The tie-up between ABS-CBN and Bacolod Chicken Inasal for the show proved to be phenomenal. “Weeks after Ysabella Chicken was aired on ABS-CBN, we had an unexpected increase in sales,” said Rose Tanalgo-Meim, Bacolod Chicken Inasal’s VP for marketing. “The exposure in the show provided that much-needed push for us.”

Although the soap opera bade farewell to its followers last week, the partnership between Bacolod Chicken Inasal and the superstar of the new generation is not about to end. Bacolod Chicken Inasal has actually tapped Juday to be its endorser to jumpstart the 2008 campaign for its flourishing business.

“The overwhelming increase in our sales because of our exposure in Judy Ann’s soap opera prompted us to get her as the endorser of our restaurant,” shared Tanalgo-Meim. “Judy Ann also represents values that are similar to our company’s like humility, simplicity and Filipino-ness. She also loves to cook that’s why she is the perfect endorser for us.”

Juday is grateful that Bacolod Chicken Inasal trusted her to become its endorser. Juday also shared that the restaurant is perfect for her healthy lifestyle.

“I eat a lot of chicken, especially if it’s grilled para healthy,” Juday said. “Kumakain ako ng inasal from Bacolod Chicken Inasal kaya in-endorse ko ito. Hindi naman ako pwedeng mag-endorse ng isang lugar kung hindi ko pinupuntahan.”

Juday has found the perfect Chicken Inasal at Bacolod Chicken Inasal because according to her its grilled chicken is juicy and delicious. “Hindi siya mapait,” she added. “Tama lang ang lasa. When you order, pwede mo pang pa-adjust ‘yung lasa.”

Bacolod Chicken Inasal is also getting ready to conquer the world. “A big group from Dubai invited us to open branches there,” said Tanalgo-Meim. “We are now in the process of restructuring to accommodate them.”

In the future, the dynamic group of siblings from Bacolod would like to introduce healthy dishes and more recipes from the south. Of course, Juday will play a big part in Bacolod Chicken Inasal’s future because Tanalgo-Meim believes that the actress has what it takes to propel the company to greater heights.

And here’s more good news: Ysabella Chicken that you’ve grown to love will still be available even after the soap.
