Rising star Geoff Taylor will celebrate his 24th birthday today, May 26, by looking back fondly on the year that was while doubly excited for the one ahead. This is because the 5’11” singer-actor made some big strides in 2009 after emerging as grand champion in a popular talent search. These include getting offers that, in his words, are everything he had always dreamed of but ones that almost eluded him: An acting job (on Daisy Siete as the male lead, no less), a regular show (on Party Pilipinas), a chance to record a solo album (already under negotiations) and product endorsements (pass by Guadalupe, look at the billboards there and you’ll know for which brand). But all these didn’t come easily to Geoff. The first time he tried to enter showbiz, Geoff got the boot due to a technicality. It can be recalled that when he joined Pinoy Dream Academy in 2006, Geoff was already 19 years old which was the age limit for all its contestants. And since he would turn 20 during the contest’s run, he got evicted early. Defeated but not disheartened, Geoff took the loss as a challenge to improve on what he already has for the next time opportunity would come knocking. While biding his time, Geoff honed his singing talent which had previously taken a backseat to his modeling career. “I didn’t even know I could sing professionally. I mean, I sing all the time but only for karaoke. I only seriously decided to find my voice, my style after PDA,” he said. Then came GMA’s Are You The Next Big Star. After 10 grueling weeks of competition, he prevailed among 16 other competitors from the male division and received the favor of the celebrity judges and text voters alike. Finally all his hard work and sacrifices paid off, “Bago ako sumampa sa stage sinasabi ko lang sa sarili ko that I need to outdo my last performance and that kind of mindset worked out for me.” “‘Yung pagkapanalo ko sa Are You The Next Big Star ay talagang life changing. Aside sa mga prizes na nakuha ko which includes P1-M and a condo unit, hinding hindi ko makakalimutan ‘yung bonding na nabuo naming mga contestants,” Geoff declared. The rest, as they say, is history. What’s more remarkable about Geoff, though, is that despite being able to have proved his worth not only to the public, but more importantly, to himself, he remains modest about everything he has achieved. He, in fact, plans to celebrate his birthday quietly with his mom and without even making a birthday wish. “I already got more than I have hoped for. If this all ends tomorrow, I would still be thankful that I got this far. Whatever else comes, I’ll take it gladly,” he said. “Whatever” could prove to be another milestone for Geoff. In July, he will take to the ramp in Bench’s yearly fashion show — the one that helped propel the likes of Dingdong Dantes and Gerald Anderson into even bigger stardom. Geoff will also be putting up his own band which would aid him greatly in establishing a career as a rock/alternative singer. Asked to describe himself, Geoff says he is far from the impression he usually makes on some people. “I know I may look suplado but that’s only because I’m a quiet guy. Once they get to know me — once the ice is broken and I warm up to them — they’d see that I’m easy to get along with. Mababaw lang ang kaligayahan, madaling makuntento. Simpleng tao lang po ako.” From his humble beginning as a HRM student back in the province of Cagayan Valley, Geoff Taylor has indeed come a long way. From lining up in long and exhausting audition queues, Geoff now gets to rub elbows with some of his most favorite performers. “Ngayon nakakasabay ko na magperform sa isang stage ‘yung mga singers na dati ay napapanood ko lang sa TV gaya ni Regine Velasquez, Jaya, Janno Gibbs at Ogie Alcasid,” Geoff quipped. “Hindi madali ‘yung dinaanan ko to get where I am now, kaya I’m determined to make my career work out.” First Posted: DIRECTLINE By Boy Abunda Watch Your Favorite Movies, Tv Shows, News And Sports Anytime You Want Here!
