A number of stories have been written about Filipinos being apprehended in US airports and sent back to Manila because of pirated CDs. Before Christmas, a Filipina became front page news when her luggage was found to have contained pirated CDs as pasalubong for her relatives in America. Another pitiable story is that of a nurse who was found to have photo copy of review materials of US nursing books.

Piracy is a crime against intellectual property. It is a worldwide problem and everybody is hoping governments everywhere would find a solution to it. Filipinos abroad often feel nostalgic which explains why CDs are common presents. These homesick Filipinos who want to get the feel of home through music, videos and movies would ask for copies of CDs containing their favorite movies, favorite recording artists and favorite videos. Thanks to The Filipino Channel they can now directly watch local Filipino shows.

OFWs abroad should worry no more on how they can get in touch with their favorite Filipino singers. They need not beg friends and relatives to send them CDs of their idols. They can now download their favorite Pinoy music through a website called Pinoytunes.net . It is the biggest on-line library of original Pinoy music which is available to Filipinos worldwide.

Pinoytunes.net is an on-line downloading music store that offers a comprehensive catalogue of hard-to-find and classic Original Pinoy Music (OPM) hits from the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, regional and folk music as well as the current releases from Manila-based record companies and independent labels. Pinoytunes.net website is the only digital music store that is serving the needs of the “classic and hard-to-find pinoy music fans.”

Pinoytunes.net was put together by my friend Bambi Fonacier, a music lover, collector and a well-respected music industry personality. He was a radio DJ in the ’70s, and he is founder of the biggest music retail store in the country (Odyssey Records). Bambi is the creator of the new digital music entertainment system and listening station called TMV (Touch Music Video).

Why focus on OPM? Bambi’s research revealed that there are more than 12 million overseas Filipinos, and over four million of them residing in the US, making the US market alone a huge potential for pinoytunes.net.

Global Filipinos of all generation will have a chance to rediscover their music roots aside from discovering new Pinoy music. Pinoytunes gives the Pinoys from all over the world a chance to hear a diverse catalogue of songs from established artists of “yesteryears” and from today’s popular and emerging artists in every genre.

Pinoytunes.net offers thousands of songs (almost 5,000 currently) in its initial database ready for downloading anytime 24/7 anywhere in the world. It is fast cultivating its catalogue of top OPM hits and classics spanning all genre of music from established, popular and new artists from major Philippine labels and independent labels. Weekly updates of its music library are also being done to give consumers fresh and varied Pinoy music choices.

Bambi is inviting all record labels and all Filipino artists all over the world to sign up with Pinoytunes. Local artists themselves are excited about the on-line library where their music — even the ones no longer being physically reproduced — will be heard worldwide and still earn royalties everytime they are purchased and downloaded.

Pinoytunes delivers music in the universally compatible MP3 format — the most popular and versatile digital file format. The only requisite to downloading music from www.pinoytunes.net is to register and registration is free. The cost of each song is $0.75, which is more affordable than any other local music downloading store’s price per song.

For further details and information, call 726-8249, fax no. 724-5308 or e-mail info@pinoytunes.net.
