'90’s singing sensation Josephine "Banig" Roberto praised and support today’s international young diva Charice for the pride she is giving to our country.

Through an e-mail sent to abs-cbnNEWS.com, Banig said that she has already heard of Charice and seen some clips of the latter’s performances via YouTube.

"I think it’s great that she is representing (our country) and I hope she continues to make us proud… She definitely has my support," Banig said.

Banig who is now living in the United States said that she’s also hoping that Charice would not go though similar bad experiences and cruelty that she went through when she was still young.

"It’s tough for a kid you know…there’s a lot of pressure coming from the community and your peers. It’s a pretty heavy load when your whole country is rooting for you to succeed and represent the entire race. It’s not an easy show… that’s for sure," explains Banig.

She also shared that when she was young, people were pretty tough on her and sometimes up to now they still are.

The first Charice

Banig like other international performers made headlines when she won the international Star Search in 1989.
But after almost three years of singing in the Philippines, Banig left the country and went to US when she was only about 11 years old.

She said that she didn’t regret leaving her homeland and tried to achieve success abroad.

So when asked what her reaction on people saying that she was the Charice in the 90s, Banig replied: "Well…of course it’s a different era. Back then… there weren’t too many child performers…now there’s a lot of them out there who are starting out so great. It’s good that we now have media tools such as the Internet… YouTube …MySpace…etc. …whereas back in the days, we strictly relied on print, radio and TV… to get recognition."

Banig also said that contrary to what other people said that she left a promising career in the Philippines, she believe that she did not have that career.

"I really don’t think that I left a "promising career" when I left Manila. I think people were excited about the whole International Star Search victory, since I did represent the Philippines…but I don’t think there was a solid enough career for me to fall back on when I left the country", Banig said.

She added that she was just 8 years old when she competed in the singing contest "Ang Bagong Kampeon".

At 9 she started doing shows, at 10 she said she was already doing solo concerts.

Then the Star Search came and at 11 she already left the country.

Banig said that she just spent a very short time in Philippines’ showbiz.

"I never released dozens of records, filmed many movies... won awards… none of that good stuff. I don’t think I’ve paid my dues yet, in terms of having a solid career in Manila…unlike the many great artists we have," explain Banig.

Comeback

In the interview, Banig said that she will be back in the Philippines if all goes as planned.

She will be here to promote her surprise – an album she dedicates for her fans and supporter.

Banig said that she is trying not to expect too much if ever she will decide to go back to her homeland. She just hopes that the people will still remember her even though they only saw her for a very short period of time.

She said that she just want her music to be heard and the have the opportunity to perform again in front of her ‘kababayans.’

She wants the Filipinos to see the new Banig – and that Banig is all grown up now. She just hopes for the best and also hopes that she would still be welcomed with open arms.

So, after many years of being away from the country's entertainment scene, the former child diva is getting ready for another chance to perform for her fans and supporters in the Philippines.

Banig is set to release her newest album in Manila, which features English and Tagalog original compositions as well as revivals.

The album's tracks are written and produced by Banig herself and sister Jhoanna "Jojo" Roberto.

Banig's US career rocketed in 1989 when she won the popular International Star Search as the Junior Vocalist champion.

She was already a songwriter even as a child, and her very first composition was 'Musika". When she was nine years old, Banig's first Tagalog release was "Makinang Kumakanta" under WEA Records.

After that she signed for VIVA Records and released her first album "Banig." Since then, she moved to US and released albums "Can You Feel My Heart" under Del-Fi Records and "Silent Whispers."Source: 'Banig' praises Charice; hopes for own successful comeback
