Last January 7, actress Rosanna “Osang” Roces, gave a rather tactless and degrading comment against school teachers. Live on the talent reality program Showtime, wherein she happened to be a guest judge, Osang somehow provoked students to think less of these professional educators by blurting “They (school teachers) were [are] just ‘repeaters.’ Tinuturo lang nila kung ano ang naituro sa kanila. Hindi na nila tinuturo kung ano ang gustong malaman ng mga bata.”

Immediately after the show, ABS-CBN management decided to take proper action regarding this anomaly. Aware that the said event is a clear violation of media ethics, they themselves undertook precautionary measures by kindly asking Osang to leave the show—a decision which Showtime hosts Vhong Navarro and Anne Curtis publicly announced the very next day.

But despite the practice of this so called self-regulation on ABS-CBN’s part, it seems that the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) won’t let this event simply pass. Last January 11, Showtime received a 20-day preventive suspension order from MTRCB, which has to be put on effect immediately.

In accordance to the said provision, Showtime will be off air starting today; and temporarily replacing its slot will be a show entitled Magpasikat, wherein different celebrities will be showing off their corresponding talents.

And since ABS-CBN management claims that a certain due process has been bypassed by MTRCB’s abrupt release of order, the network will then be working on appeal to the board regarding this matter, starting tomorrow. Below is ABS-CBN’s official statement.

In the spirit of self-regulation, ABS-CBN removed Rosanna Roces as a judge in SHOWTIME after she made statements against the teachers in the January 7 live show. But despite this, MTRCB still imposed a 20-day preventive suspension for the program.

A preventive suspension is issued to stop further violations, if there were any committed, or for the interest or welfare of the public. Thus, the network questions the need for said preventive suspension when Rosanna Roces has already been removed from the program.

SHOWTIME is a highly entertaining show watched by many Filipinos. It helps promote and showcase the creativity and talent of kapamilyas nationwide, uplifts their spirit and provides opportunities to improve their lives.
